John C. Bland Culinary Salon = My first competition.

“Sautéed Chicken Breast over Handmade Pasta in a Rustic Tomato Cream Sauce with four kinds of Mushrooms.”

My dad and I developed this dish and I competed with it back in October 2011.

After some not so great critique from the judges about how they didn’t like the plating and how the COLLEGE student’s dish was perfect compared to the rest of ours, I figured I’d come home empty handed.

I love when I am wrong about such things. I brought home a Bronze Medal.

Phew. It’s been a while.

Last weekend I had the honor of working Muhammad Ali’s 70th Birthday Party and Escape For Good (a retreat/conference for pro athletes).

This is the menu from Friday night. We had the opportunity to work along side local and celebrity chefs and it was an amazing experience.

I’m working on the line, shredding 50 pounds of jicama when Chef comes over and extends his hand to me. I look at him confused and then reach to shake it and he says to me “Congratulations!”. I clarified that we were talking about by asking if I had placed in the competition, because I was so nervous that thinking clearly was not an option. Chef looked me right in the eye and said “You won. You took first place”. After letting out a shriek of pure joy, I ran in to his office to see the email for myself. I had won first place.

I am the 1st place C-Cap Junior in the state of Arizona.

I can not begin to tell you have thrilled and honored I am.
